CMVP Reaches Zero Queue: A Milestone Worth Celebrating!

·

The Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) recently reached an impressive milestone: they reduced the queue of newly submitted FIPS 140-3 modules awaiting review to zero.

At the same time, the CMVP is issuing a record number of FIPS 140-3 certificates, demonstrating the tremendous progress the program has made as FIPS 140-3 has become firmly established across the cryptographic industry.

This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of the teams at NIST and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, along with the accredited laboratories, vendors, engineers, and security professionals who contribute to the validation ecosystem.

It is a milestone worth celebrating, and comes at exactly the right time to start talking about what happens next.

Celebrate the Present – Shape the Future

With ISO/IEC 19790:2025 having been published for over a year and FIPS 140-2 certificates expiring in a little over a month, the cryptographic assurance community needs to discuss the future of cryptographic module security, testing, and validation, now more than ever. That conversation will be at the heart of Crypto-V Alliance’s inaugural conference, FIPS ’n’ Chips 2026, taking place October 26th to 27th in Austin, Texas.

The conference brings together government, industry, testing laboratories, academia, and users of validated cryptography, with NIST and CCCS experts among the confirmed speakers, and a dedicated track on the second day of the conference will provide an opportunity for an in-depth discussion with the CMVP, including how to adopt the 2025 edition of ISO/IEC 19790.

We firmly believe that the people who develop, test, validate, and rely on cryptographic technologies should be part of that conversation.

Honoring the Community Behind the Achievement

FIPS ’n’ Chips is also an opportunity to highlight the people and organizations whose expertise and commitment make cryptographic validation possible.

During the networking dinner, the Crypto-V Alliance will honor organizations that have recently received FIPS 140-3 certificates, together with representatives of the laboratories that supported their validations. We will also acknowledge laboratory professionals who have successfully passed the CMVP Cryptographic Validation Program (CVP) Exam.
