Professor Peter Stone is one of the world’s leading researchers in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. He serves as Head of the School of Computing and holds the Truchard Foundation Chair in Computer Science at The University of Texas at Austin, where he is also the Founding Director of Texas Robotics and founder of the Learning Agents Research Group (LARG). In addition, he serves as Chief Scientist of Sony AI, where he helps guide the development of next-generation AI technologies.
Professor Stone’s research is driven by a long-term vision of creating complete intelligent agents capable of adapting, interacting, and learning effectively in complex real-world environments. His work spans machine learning, reinforcement learning, multiagent systems, robotics, and autonomous decision-making, with applications ranging from robot soccer and autonomous vehicles to human-interactive agents and intelligent transportation systems. His philosophy combines the development of novel algorithms with the rigorous implementation and evaluation of practical systems that solve challenging real-world problems.
A pioneer in autonomous agents, Professor Stone co-authored the foundational papers that launched the RoboCup initiative and later served as President of the international RoboCup Federation. His research has earned numerous international honors, including election as an ACM Fellow, IEEE Fellow, AAAS Fellow, AAAI Fellow, Guggenheim Fellow, and Fulbright Scholar. Among his many distinctions are the IJCAI Computers and Thought Award, the ACM/SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award, and the 2024 ACM-AAAI Allen Newell Award, one of the field’s highest honors.
Professor Stone has authored hundreds of scientific publications and several influential books on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.
